FARM TRIP

Sunday, May 31, 2009

Depart Brooklyn at 9:00am, return to Brooklyn around 4:00pm
RSVP to williamsburgcsa@gmail.com by NOON on Thursday, May 28 by indicating either FARM TRIP DRIVER or FARM TRIP RIDER in the subject line.
Don't miss this integral CSA experience! See where your veggies come from, how they are grown, and meet the farmers that grow them.
The day will include:
  • Walking tour of the farm
  • Collecting eggs from the chickens
  • Lunch and visit to Garden of Eve's farm stand
  • Depending on the weather, a stroll over to the nearby beach on the Long Island Sound

Garden of Eve Farm is located on the north fork of Long Island in Riverhead, about 80 miles from Greenpoint/Williamsburg. Because LIRR schedules are limited on the weekend, we recommend CARPOOLING or participating in our VAN SHARE to maximize your visit. Friends and families are welcome!

SCHEDULE:
9:00 AM: Depart Brooklyn to arrive the farm at 10:30 AM. If this feels way early, just think how much our farmers do before 9:00am everyday!
MIDDAY: Potluck picnic: Bring a sandwich/main dish for yourself plus a side/dessert to share. (Some food is available for purchase at the Farm Stand.)
3:00 PM: Depart farm to beat traffic and return to Brooklyn.

HAVE A RIDE?
Will you be driving? Please send an email with the subject: FARM TRIP DRIVER with the number of seats you can make available and your neighborhood as soon as possible. Also let us know if you have experience driving 15 passenger vans. You will be notified by follow-up email of your riders.

NEED A RIDE?
The goal is to match everyone who needs a ride into a carpool. If we have more riders than can be accommodated, we will be renting vans, and these seats will cost approximately $20 each. If you are interested in being matched for a ride or buying a van seat, please send an email with the subject: FARM TRIP RIDER with your neighborhood and mention if you are not positive you will attend (you will not have priority for the van, but you will not risk paying for a seat you won't use- see below). You will be notified by follow-up email of your ride arrangement.

Note: While van seats will be payable at departure on May 31, reservations for the van are NOT guaranteed to be refundable. If you or a stand-in can't make it at the last minute and the reserved seat is left empty, you will have cost someone a ride and our farm trip volunteer part of the rental fee. You will owe at the first pick-up. Please understand your commitment in advance.

WHAT TO BRING:

  • Lunch: A sandwich/main dish for yourself plus a side/dessert to share
  • Snacks
  • Sunblock
  • A sweater or a windbreaker

COMPOSTING OPPORTUNITIES IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD

Did you know that the average New York City household discards two pounds of organic waste each day? Did you know that food and yard waste together make up 24 percent of U.S. municipal solid waste?

Don't send it to the landfill! Compost it!

Spring is in the air and the compost piles in the neighborhood are heating up! You can now drop off your organic waste at either of these 2 convenient locations.

(Never composted before? Here's a list of what to bring and what not to bring: http://www.nyccompost.org/how/materials.html#materials)

CHURCH OF THE MESSIAH AT 129 RUSSELL STREET (also the Wednesday Distribution Site)

At the last GWCSA core group meeting, we approved the purchase of three new compost bins at our Wednesday distribution site (the Church of the Messiah at 129 Russell Street.) Members will be welcome to bring their organic waste during the regular season on Wednesday evenings.

These bins also handle the waste from our Wednesday distribution.

We will be accepting compost before the season begins as well. Bring it on Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons and just hang it on the fence at the church.

MCCARREN PARK AT N. 12TH AND DRIGGS (also the Saturday Distribution Site)

(From our friends at the North Brooklyn Compost Project)

The 2009 hours are: Saturdays, from 9 am to 1 pm and..... brand spanking new...... Wednesdays, from 6 to 8 pm. That's right folks, you can get rid of your organics during the week. Our first evening drop off is this Wednesday, May 20th.

In order to keep the site running for the next 5 months, we now have mandatory sweat equity opportunities. Everyone, yes, each and every one of you, must complete a two hour shift in order to continue dropping off your kitchen waste.

If you are physically unable to work, please let let us know as there are plenty of ways to contribute. However, if you are able but unwilling to commit to one 2 hour shift this summer, we ask that you take your scraps to the Union Square drop off. That program is funded and staffed by paid employees, while we are not.

We have four volunteer slots on Saturdays (2 people bet. 9 and 11 am, and 2 bet 11 am and 2 pm) and two on Wednesdays (2 people bet. 6 and 8 pm). We will hold volunteer trainings at least once a month, with the first one taking place this Wednesday.

We met the farmer!

It was great seeing everyone at today's "Meet the Farmer" event! What a great way to kick off our 2009 season. If you weren't already getting excited for strawberries, garlic scapes, pea shoots, greens and all the other yummy early season veggies and fruit, I know you are now!

Chris's talk was absolutely riveting, and we learned so much about the history of the farm, about organic farming, and about how "our" farm runs on a day to day basis. To be able to have the person that is going to feed us all summer talk about how important we, the CSA members, are to him, and to know how much time, effort, and love he and Eve and the rest of their apprentices and staff put into our food every year is truly heartwarming, and made me realize what a special relationship we're a part of! A BIG thanks to all of them!
